Wisdom Teeth

To remove or not remove, that is the question.

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt in the mouth, which is why they get the name "wisdom", we are older when they come in.  Unfortunately for many of us there just is not enough room for them to erupt normally.  In those cases the wisdom teeth are impacted, which means they are partially or totally under the gum or in the jaw and can't come in.

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain or infections, common reasons they are extracted.  They also are difficult to keep clean and are more prone to tooth decay.  Partially impacted teeth can not be filled.

Other indications for extraction of wisdom teeth:

  • To improve periodontal health.  Studies have shown wisdom teeth have more pocketing and can make the overall periodontal health of the mouth worse.
  • To relieve crowding.  Removing the impacted wisdom teeth can create space.  This is especially important with braces.
  • To prevent future pain, infections, or periodontal problems.
  • To prevent cysts or other pathology from developing.  Impacted wisdom teeth are associated with an increased risk of cysts and tumors.

We recommend removing impacted wisdom teeth, even when there are no complaints, before 30 - 35 years of age.

Sedation and Anesthesia

Why have surgery with just novocaine when there are more comfortable alternatives?  We offer different options to maximize patient comfort.

  • Nitrous oxide otherwise know as "laughing gas".  Easy to use and blows quickly out of the system.  Patient can drive home carefree.
  • IV sedation.  With a small catheter in the arm medications are introduced while monitored to allow for a relaxing and comfortable experience
  • Dental general anesthesia.  With multiple medications through the IV a patient can be in a "twilight sleep" and have no worries.

Dr. Vakkas is certified by NY State because of his training and has successfully completed the Office Anesthesia Certification process of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons through the NY State Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
