Oral Cancer Awareness Week April 14-20

Around 30,000 americans are diagnosed each year with oral cancer. Despite great advances in medicine and surgery the overall mortality is still relatively unchanged. There is a new trend where younger patients than the average elderly smoker and drinker are being diagnosed. This is thought to be a result of HPV infection.

Dr. Vakkas attended the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons annual conference in the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia 2011.  Yorktown Oral Surgery practices the latest evidence based techniques.

April is National Facial Protection Month...

Each April, AAOMS joins the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Association of Orthodontists in sponsoring National Facial Protection Month, the national campaign that promotes the safety benefits of wearing protective mouth and headgear when engaging in sports activities. As OMSs, we know the devastating injuries to the oral and maxillofacial regions that can occur when children and adults choose to play without protection. Here at Yorktown Oral surgery we are talking to our patients and communities about mouthguards, helmets and other protective devices.

Tissue Engineering and Growth Factors

Columbia University, where Dr. Vakkas is an Assistant Clinical Professor, is doing pioneering research in Tissue Engineering.  Research is being done to engineer teeth using stem cells, growth factors, and a biologic scaffold.
